THE VASCULAR SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (VASSA)

The Vascular Society of Southern Africa was formed in 1982 with a view of developing a professional society that would promote excellence in the development, teaching and practice of Vascular Surgery in South Africa. In 1994 the society changed it's constitution and name to the Vascular Society of Southern Africa, to allow Vascular Surgeons practicing in countries south of the Sahara to become members of the society.

The society presently has approximately 150 members of whom 40 are clinicians solely practicing in the field of vascular surgery. It holds an annual congress. These meetings in alternating years are held in conjunction with the biennial congress of the Association of Surgeons of South Africa. In the alternating years symposia concentrating on particular topics of interest are held. The meetings are well attended and frequently attract a large number of colleagues from other parts of the world.

The society has a close association with the Association of Surgeons of South Africa and through this organisation has access to the South African Journal of Surgery.
